Chapter 15
Meghan was just finishing up with the dishes when a heavy knock pounded on her door. She jumped, dropping the plate she was currently drying onto the floor. She tsked as it shattered, stepping around the mess to go answer the door.
âHello?â She said questioningly at the scowling man who greeted her.
âYou're husband's passed out in the back of my cab.â He snapped, gesturing to the yellow car parked at the curb. âI tried to get him to wake up but he's passed out cold. I drove him clear across town so either you cough up some cash lady or my next stop is the police station.â
âMy husband?â She walked to the curb and peered in the back of the car. âLack!â
She yanked the door open and scrambled into the back seat. He lay completely still, his skin so colorless he appeared dead. Frantically she searched for a pulse, not even sure if god's had heartbeats. When she felt a faint, weak flutter she almost sobbed with relief. She rounded on the cabby. âWhat happened?â
He recoiled at her tone, throwing his hands up in surrender, his bluster of moments ago changing to nervousness as he realized he may have misread the situation. âLook lady, I thought he was drunk. He flagged me down, gave me the address and then passed out. That's all that happened. I just drove over here like he asked.â
âAnd you didn't for a second stop to think maybe you should check on him?â She snarled.
âHey, a good chunk of my business comes from people being too drunk to drive themselves home. Having somebody pass out is nothing special.â His eyes swept nervously over Lack's pale, still form. âShould I call an ambulance?â
For an instant Meghan almost agreed, and then realized the mess that would get them into. She wasn't even sure that modern medicine would even help him and too many questions would be asked. No, calling an ambulance was the last thing they should do. âNo, no ambulance. He's diabetic. If you can just help me him get him inside I can give him a shot and he'll be fine.â Meghan wasn't even sure that's how diabetes worked, but it was the first thing that came to mind.
The cabbie readily agreed, relieved to be let off the hook. Within minutes they had Lack stretched out on Meghan's bed while Meghan dug a handful of bills out of her pocket to settle the fare. The moment the cabbie disappeared out the door Meghan rushed to Lack's side. âLack! Lack!â She frantically shook his shoulder but he was unresponsive.
His skin was chill to the touch and she grabbed a thick stack of blankets to pile on top of him. Unsure of what else to do Meghan settled down next to him to wait. Nearly an hour passed and there was no change. He simply lay still, barely breathing, heartbeat painfully weak. Meghan didn't know what to do. She was at the end of her rope. She had no one to call, no one to turn to.
